What my Goals are for this week

June 25th, 2007 at

Goals are great, they give you something to work towards and when achieved can make you feel proud. I tend to have a problem with finishing websites and if i do finish them i usually don’t get round to promoting them until weeks after they’ve been online. One site in particular which im extremely proud of is Fragbucket - Video Game Media Website that i created in January 2006 with an alexa rank of 410,000 and eating up server rental costs leaving it without attention is losing me alot of money so this week it’s my main focus as i just turned down a generous offer from a buyer. What was i thinking!

What is Fragbucket?

Fragbucket is a niche video website aimed at electronic sports (eSports.) If your unsure of what esports is then it’s competitive gaming - Playing opponents in video games, usually the PC or the xbox for large sums of money in online leagues and tournaments. It’s an underground sport but is now starting to appear on Television and Online Media. If you live in the United Kingdom switch over to channel 291 on Sky to see Xleague Television for a more indepth look at it.

If you want to know a little more about this project then here’s some features of the website:

  • Video Uploads and Conversion to FLV format
  • Video Uploads supporting all major formats and upload sizes limited to 1GB
  • Integrated Forums with database and style
  • Complete CSS tableless Design
  • Adsense Revenue Sharing for Uploaders called ‘FragCash’

Fragbucket Forums

The idea of fragbucket is to allow users to upload videos and share them, yes similar to youtube but with one advantage. The quality of the videos created are much higher on Fragbucket and that is one main reason why gamers will prefer Fragbucket over the likes of youtube.

This weeks goals in improving Fragbucket

This week i will be focusing most of my time on Fragbucket to improve the design, add new features and then start some sort of promotion campaign - Not sure if it will be PPC based but most probably. Making a site userfriendly is one of the most important aspects of design and one inwhich i have failed at in creating fragbucket so to rectify the mistakes here’s my plan of action;

Videogame Videos

  • Move the Login box to the top right for easy access and to the ‘industry standard’ area
  • Improve Ad positions and blending (probably removing the majority without affecting the adsense sharing)
  • Add a Filter by Game option to search through videos by Game or Console
  • Remove the ‘Roll over effect’ on buttons and text
  • Improve the layout and restructure the homepage
  • Optimize the servers for faster streaming

Once the website is fixed up and looking alot better the plans for promotion are, Banner advertising on high traffic videogame websites, Competitions and sponsor prize giveaways and PPC advertising. But there is one thing that i am not sure on and i would like your opinions,

Should i change the colour scheme of the website? (white and blue maybe..)

What do i hope to achieve in 3months time?

  • An Alexa rank of 100,000 or lower
  • A large and active forum community
  • Weekly prizes and giveaways
  • Making a couple of dollars atleast ;)

Although my main concern is not making money when it comes to Fragbucket, it’s a website i made because i enjoyed videogames. It forced me to learn php, css, html ect… in more detail than before and now i really need to get it to pay for itself.
